Sir Bob Geldof

Businessman, Political Activist, Songwriter, Musician & Author

 

Born in 1951, Sir Bob Geldof is one of Ireland’s most successful exports and is known throughout the world for his many talents and passions. Starting his career as a successful musician, actor and songwriter, he has gone on to both inspire a generation and make prolific social changes as a philanthropist and political activist. An inspiring and influential public speaker, he speaks on a range of topics and uses his vast personal experiences to both provoke and motivate his audience.

 

Shooting to fame as the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats, Bob Geldof was a major player in the 70s punk rock movement and enjoyed over a decade of hits between 1975 and 1986. After leaving the band, he launched a successful solo career, published his best-selling autobiography, “Is That It?” and worked as a radio DJ, journalist and television presenter.

 

In 1984 Geldof was watching the news one night when he was horrified by a report on the famine in Ethiopia. As we all now know he got on the phone. The result was Live Aid - “the biggest and greatest event in pop history”. $200 million was raised for the starving and the dying in Ethiopia. Geldof established and continues to be the chairman of the Band Aid trust, which operates in eight African countries. 

 

Bob Geldof has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize 8 times, more than any living nominee, and was honoured with a knighthood by HM Queen Elizabeth II; received the Nobel Man of Peace award from Mikhail Gorbachev; was awarded The North-South human rights award in Portugal; and awarded the medal of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France and received numerous TV and music awards as well as The Royal Society, Peabody and Royal Geographical Society awards. 

 

Having reformed The Boomtown Rats they now have their first studio album since 1984 Citizens of Boomtown; a massive documentary about Bob and the history of the Rats and a new book Tales of Boomtown Glory was published in March 2020 - an anthology of the complete lyrics from Bob Geldof’s Boomtown Rats and solo albums, interwoven with Geldof’s witty, deeply felt and frank commentaries of the background, inspiration and context behind some of his songs.


 

Bob is internationally recognised as a leading authority on world politics, international and current affairs, music, humanitarian issues, philanthropy, poverty, human rights and Africa.

Using his own background of Band Aid, Live Aid, Live 8 and his many businesses, and being one of the world’s most successful agents of change, will discuss political and commerce leadership, the disruption of politics, both in the West and the East, and its impact on world stability and sustainability.


He will explore our own ability to make change and to become a party to actions instead of bystanders waiting for others to take action.

His talk will be ‘of the moment’ and include the issues facing us as a population and a planet.

JAMIE HYNEMAN

Professor James Franklin ”Jamie” Hyneman is an American special effects expert who is best known as the former co-host of the television series MythBusters alongside Adam Savage where he became known for his distinctive beret and walrus mustache.


He is also the owner of M5 Industries, the special effects workshop where MythBusters was filmed.


He is known among Robot Wars devotees for his robot entry Blendo, which was deemed too dangerous for entry in the competition. He is the inventor of the Sentry, an unmanned firefighting robotic vehicle. He is also one of the designers of the aerial cable robotic camera system Wavecam used in sports and entertainment events.


Speaks about robots and innovations through mmhmm - on the big screen. 


risto e.j. penttilä

Risto E. J. Penttilä, Ph.D. (b. 1959) is the Managing Director of Nordic West Office.


He has previously served as the CEO of the Central Chamber of Commerce, as the head of the Delegation of Finnish Business and as a Member of Parliament.

Already in December 2021, he predicted that Finland would have to seriously consider applying for NATO membership in spring 2022, but he has shaken up Finland before: in January 1990, Penttilä proposed scrapping the CFE Treaty as an unnecessary remnant of the Cold War.

He completed his doctorate at Oxford in 1989 and his interests include Finnish foreign and security policy and the "Nordic model".

JUTTA URPILAINEN

Jutta Urpilainen (born 1975) is the European Commissioner for International Partnerships. She served as President of the SDP from 2008 to 2014 and as Minister of Finance in the Katainen government from 2011 to 2014. She has been a Member of Parliament for the Vaasa constituency from 2003 to 2019 and a member of Kokkola City Council and its first ever female Chairperson from 2015 to 2016. 


Jutta brings greetings to the Kipinä big screen from Ursula van der Leyn's "geopolitical commission" and explains how her work promotes the European Union's international partnerships and development policy objectives in the face of the challenges created by the war in Ukraine.

Petri Salminen is entrepreneur in Salminen & Tikka Ltd providing business and sales development services. He is also partner in family-owned enterprise AJ-Tools Oy Ltd operating in metal industry.

He studied marketing, leadership and commercial law in Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics.

DANIEL PELTONEN

Before joining Boliden AB, Daniel has many years of experience from industrial companies i.e. as Business Area Manager, as site Manager for Business Unit and several roles as Production Manager both in Sweden and internationally.

Director, CEO of Veritas Pension Insurance

For the past five years, Haglund has been the chairman of the board for Finnish Business and Policy Forum.


Before joining Veritas, he was Managing Director and a member of the global leadership council at Accenture. In the past, he has worked as the Finnish Minister of Defence and as a member of the European Parliament.
